Variable barcodes, “price embedded” or “02” barcodes are a sub-section of the barcode defintition that allows for data to be placed into the barcode itself such as the price, weight or quantity at the time of barcode creation.
Variable barcodes are commonly used at hot food counters and deli’s as well as for prepacked food and lotto tickets among others.
A variable barcode can appear in any number of formats - Tapa caters for this by allowing unlimited and multiple defintitions of barcode formats for the system to recognise.
On the navigation menu, select settings, next select barcodes.
Select +New Definition.
Fill out the relevant information.
You must enter a flag, also known as a prefix. This is usually a 2 digit number prefix, seeing a barcode starting with these digits will let Tapa know this is an embedded barcode.
Varible barcodes typically run like FFPPPPPCVVVVC Where F represents the prefix digits, P represents the product reference, C represents a check digit and V represents the variable value.
In Tapa the value can be either Weight, Quantity or Price.
One of the following variable parts can be used, be careful not to use a combination as only one can be supported per definition.
Finally a check digit
Additionally Tapa supports determining the quantity in situations where the variable part represents Weight or Price.
To avail of this a price must be set on the product as the incoming price value will be divided by this value to determine the quantity.
